PNW Roadtrip 2011 - Part 3

The Finale.. The last leg of Seattle, one more stop in Portland and then we we're headed southbound.

I feel inspired to start making postcards. The city lights over the water is just so beautiful.

It's year two of New Year's Eve in Seattle. And another year of pre downtown celebration prep at the Coleman's.

And then add a few layers and take a bus downtown..

Happy NEW Year! From the space needle. It's really great to enjoy fireworks in a street full of people celebrating as well.

PNW Roadtrip 2011 - Part 1

Part 1: Fullerton to Lake Isabella. Lake Isabella to Shasta. Shasta to Portland.
... And so begins the 2nd annual roadtrip. In a search for weather, good coffee, friends and adventure we set off on the 20 hour drive.

We were the guest of quite a few rest stops.. They are much prettier in Oregon.

Oops.. The car is far and it's really raining. Oh wait, Awesome!

On our way out we stopped at Multnomah Falls. We had hopes to hike to the top but dark and rain rolled in. It was adventure none the less.

It's so great to walk Portland. I love the many unique shops, restaurants and new areas to explore. And the green moss, trees and plant covered porches are so lovely and unique. I could sit in a fabulous coffee shop and drink coffee, people watch, read/write and ponder all day long. Oh, and I am pretty sure it's never 78 in December like SoCal.

Family mini Christmas Shoot

A few weeks ago my Sunday morning was spent with a handful of great families. After capturing Amy's twin's birthday party last year I was stoked to see them again and do a holiday photo shoot. Thanks to my lovely friend Joyce Murphy.. It is now a tradition of mine to make pumpkin pasta during the lovely Fall season. And of course it goes especially well on pumpkin carving nights.
I cannot think of a year I have not carved a pumpkin. It would make me pretty sad if I did not find time to enjoy this yearly activity. It came close this year but two days before Halloween Charles planned an evening to make sure we carved. So we bought the supplies, found perfect little pumpkins and began prepping. It was a much needed mellow night in (yes, sweatpants and all) enjoying the festivities.

2nd Annual Drake House Fall Fest

At the Drake house (that's our house's name) we like to go all out for fun Holidays. Fall and Christmas get the most attention. Sometimes Spring too. We finally picked a date that worked for all 3 residents and started planning all the pumpkin and apple things we could enjoy.. and share with others.
It was a fun night of friends, pie, cookies, dips, fire pit, festive drinks and celebration. Thanks to all who came and shared in the joy.

.. But technically it is the Season of Fall.
I LOVE Fall. Although I really have yet to experience a "real" Fall, it's one of my favorite times. It get's a little cooler (Sometimes), clothing is more fun and most importantly.. festivities begin.
While it was a hot weekend, Charles and I squeezed in a quick trip to Oak Glen. It was way too warm and crowded but we made the best of apple tasting, exploring and a yummy meal. Too bad it isn't cooler for Apple Season.

I am grateful for little get-a-ways. Hume has been a great place for those. Even though it's a 5 hour drive it's beautiful and well worth it. Plus, people have been so great in creating and allowing space for me to stay and feel at home. And then I get to enjoy a trip to the mountains, the fresh air, exploring and visiting people.

This past weekend Jocey and Nathan became Mr and Mrs. The ceremony had the least decor I have ever seen but it was absolutely beautiful. The weather cleared up just in time and everything was great. There were such personal touches in the details. Plus a little road trip, lack of sleep and mountain adventure with Charles. Well worth the tiredness that followed.

And then... we began the journey home later than intended. But just as we hit the road the storm finally moved in. We stopped, grabbed a blanket and sat on the perfect rock to overlook the valley and watched as the storm got closer. Thunder became constant and eventually very intense. The breeze increased and the temperature dropped. Ok, a lot of details but in all of these changes I was absolutely ecstatic. I love storms and this was beautiful!

... Brad and Lauren have always been so cute in their interactions but this day was especially adorable. You could really see the excitement and love permeating through every moment of their day. Plus I love spending time at Old Cal Coffee House so hearing they were getting married there was exciting! You gotta love the uniqueness of such a great coffee shop as a venue.

Seriously, for the last 3 years or so I have tried to, unsuccessfully, get a group together to go camping. I've missed camping, sleeping in a tent,a little isolation and nature time. Finally we planned a trip a took a group from church. It was just one night but Malibu was lovely and now I am very much in need of another trip asap.

She is almost a Tass. A Mrs. She just celebrated her last birthday as a single woman. This is going to be a great year.

My thoughts, energy and heart have gone into the Bridal Shower to celebrate the special occasion. I am so blessed to have Tiffany as a co maid of honor as well as a fabulous party of bridesmaids to work alongside.

Thursday finally rolled around and Tiffany returned to California. Friday night was dedicated to prep, reuniting and sharing in the excitement. And eventually, everything was in place and the celebration began. There was such a perfect blend of excitement, tears, laughter, competition and love.

I've got a handful of friend's who are quite excited to be graduating from Biola. They are working super hard and it is about to pay off. Ashley is a photographer and that can make being the subject of photos hard but she was great and super comfortable.

Morning commute dispute.

Today on my 8-10 minute commute to work I heard one radio conversation and it was quite disturbing. On the radio station (star 98.7 to be exact) a woman was on the line. They we're about to make a call to her husband. There was absolutely no quality music on the presets so I half listened to the conversation.

A woman made a call to the caller's husband. The woman explained she was from a new floral business and she wanted to offer him a free dozen roses sent to the person of his choice. He hesitates but after some reassurance it is free he accepts. When she asked him who he would like to have them sent to he said, "My wife, Elizabeth". The 'florist' thanked him.
At this point the radio host steps in and explains that his wife thinks he might be having an affair and they are glad he chose to send flowers to his wife. He is completely confused and hesitant. His wife comes on to explain that he has been acting distant and has the signs of a cheater. After more confusion he assures her he is not cheating and explains that he takes her on dates and tries and feels rejected, especially since they have not been intimate in over 3 months. She combats that with her feelings and request he try harder. He is clearly discouraged and in shock.
Once again the radio host steps in and affirms him in continuing to pursue his wife and affirms her in communicating and loving him, tells them to hug it out and hangs up.

If you are still tracking with me are you thinking, "What the _____?"
I was certainly upset as I arrived to work. This is someone's personal marriage and family and this station has a regular calling opportunity for people to corner their significant others in the potential of an affair? Appalled. How must that husband have felt after he was accused on public radio? I imagine the conversation didn't get better after the radio dismissed them.
Is marriage not sacred anymore?
Do people not care to communicate with each other?
What happened to putting one another first? Honesty? Value? Privacy?

A time of surrender.
I am grateful for this time of sacrifice as a reminder to draw closer to God. I have multiple people in my life whose marriages need as much prayer as possible. I have tough relationships and next step decisions that need clarity. I have a desire to cling more desperately to Jesus.
I am thankful for this reminder to lay all of that before Him.

I met Katie at Eastside.
She worked at xxxchurch in Vegas with me.
We've had many adventures in Fullerton/Vegas.
You know what I love about Katie? Well, a lot of things but one thing I really love is how much she is herself. She constantly cracks me up and it's totally her just being her. But I've seen her heart, passion, love and adventure for each day.
It's almost time for Katie to Graduate from Biola. She has worked hard and the world better watch out.

Winter... finally.

Hi.. I like cold weather, clouds, mountains and exploring.
It hasn't been very cold this winter.. snow is limited and melty when I snowboard and it's sunburn weather.
I have used my A/C in my car recently.
None of this is okay with me.. it's February! I know it is socal but please.

So the good news is Hume Lake is currently cold (well, cool). And beautiful, snowy, winter clothing requiring and a definite get-a-way. Charles went to work winter camp for the weekend and it was a great change to explore, relax, meet new people, snow board and enjoy the mountains, stars and coat wearing.

I really love the mountains. The crisp air, the pretty skies, the nature scenes and the fun exploring - snowboarding, hiking, camping, etc. that they bring. While it hasn't been as cold as I would like I have thoroughly enjoyed times of solitude, snow play and lovely people that all create the little moments that stick.

This is one of my top favorite look out spots. It's on the way to arrowhead.

I made the girls stop in the cold with me to take it in. Love these ladies.

This blog post kicks off the first of a few from the recent roadtrip to Portland/Seattle and back.
We all know I love coffee. What I love more is when it's at a lovely coffee shop with a great vibe, comfy chairs, people watching, contemplating and especially ordering my coffee in a mug "for here." You know this was easy to find in the pacific northwest.

Albina Press, Stumptown, Verite, Coava, Lighthouse, Umbria.. I might be missing one or two. It was cold so hot drinks were all the more valuable. Plus, such good times exploring these places with people who also love coffee and coffee houses. Downtime, observing, match making, conversation.. What's not to love?

It has been a busy busy week with 11 Christmas services, events, shopping, spending time with lovely people and life. Great things that I am truly blessed with but right now it is so good to be in the glow of my lovely Christmas tree, gingerbread house in front of me, lots of wrapping gifts, Christmas music, candles and pajamas. I am tired and peaceful downtime is so good. Time to rest, be thankful and reflect. This is valuable. I am thankful for a great time I worked with to put on 11 services in our video cafe with good, drinks and a lounge atmosphere. I certainly pray God moved in the hearts that attended.
Let's celebrate His birth!

Decorating our house was super fun. I am definitely more than okay with starting before Thanksgiving. December goes way too fast. I am keeping my tree forever. Okay, the roomies might not let me but just a little longer.

Music is on, fresh cup of french pressed coffee, afternoon sun through the window. I like this moment and I feel like writing.

I've been contemplative today. Many different thoughts ranging from what I need to get done today, things I want to do soon, relationships, growth and challenges in my life, etc. Right now I am running through a few goals I would like to carry out soon.

Here's the list:

1. Learn how to keep my car clean (mainly inside). It often looks like I live in my car. Many of you have found many handy things in my car but I'd like to avoid the rearranging of stuff so I can fit people in my car issue.

2. Go on a long road trip and all the comes with it. Singing in the car, feet out the window, genuine conversations, truck stops, snacks, photo taking, getting lost, exploring. It has been too long.

3. Hang my hammock. Hello! I have had my hammock since the Mexico trip of '06 or '07 which I was so stoked for and I have NEVER used it. Wow, that is horrible. I need to either get a stand or hang it from our Avocado tree. Pronto.

4. Sleep under the stars. No tent or housing. First I have to be somewhere I can actually see the stars. Second I think I need to go somewhere that I am not afraid a bear will eat me. I can't believe I haven't done this.

5. Be present. There is a part of me that has not been present in my relationships with people or Jesus and I am not diggin' that. There's a distance that needs to be eliminated. I'm missing out.

Wow, hello.
It has been far too long since I have blogged. And this post is well overdue.
I love taking pictures and documenting life but it is so special when it's for people you are so close to. Like Maggie and Jala. How lucky am I to be able to capture the life, emotion and romance between them?
I am anxious for our next location and shoot.

And, they both look great!

I cannot wait until July 15th, 2011. Seriously.

Julian Adventure Day

Anyway, A couple Mondays ago Sadie and I went to the lovely little town of Julian. It was October so it would have been nice if it felt like Fall but I know, it's California. None the less is was a lovely day - pic nic, exploring shops, people watching, pie eating, picture taking, pumpkin patching and hilarious moments. It was a lovely drive filled with conversation and no agenda except to explore. I am grateful for Sadie and a lovely day away.

Anissa & Michael are Engaged!

Last night was beautiful. The last few weeks of hearing Mike's heart and ideas have been so valuable. I am blessed by both of their friendship's and honored to be a part of such a big moment! Michael (and his great boys) put so much effort into the plan, decor, etc. When you take wedding photos you get to be a part of special moments but last night I was able to document an incredible moment no one else got to see. The raw emotion, nerves and excitement was great to view from a distance (hiding in a dark corner).

I wanted to post a blog in honor of Maggie and how much she means to me. I think I have the perfect reason now.

Call us lame if you want but we've had a long running phrase between us. Well, we've had a lot but this one is MJP. There have been a lot of interesting guesses as to what that means but it's pretty simple: Maggie Jesus Phylicia. Yup, just our dorky phrase from high school about how we love Jesus and He is the main part of our friendship. It's stuck around and I am quite fond of it.

Some more history for you.. I haven't always gotten along with Maggie's boyfriends very well. She liked mine but the feeling wasn't mutual. We actually always fought more than anything. It wasn't a jealousy thing. I think it might be a mix of not the greatest guys and us just clashing. But there is someone who I have always gotten along with - Jala. Before Maggie and Jala started dating Jala and I had some great conversations and he was always such an affirming gentleman. When they started dating I sat him down and gave him my speech about treating her well. When things were tough on multiple occasions I communicated with them both. I like Jala. No I love Jala. I have seen so much grace, Jesus, love, growth and heart in him. This one is different. Tonight I thought about the fact that we also = mjp. I think it fits well.

Pacific Northwest: Seattle Part Three

For real, it was really hot. 93 degrees. For days. I was hoping for clouds, cool air and moisture. Clear skies did make for good exploring but also a lot of sweating. The good news is the last day was COLD and misting and cloudy. The perfect send off. I think if I lived there I would be stoked when the sun came out for brief warm weather. But that's the norm in Cali and it just gets boring. But I am loving this gloomy wednesday, hot coffee and comfortable temperatures!

Maybe one of the best parts of my week in the PNW was being away and simply not knowing (or caring) what time it was. Besides knowing a time to catch a bus, time was pretty irrelevant. Since the sun goes down closer to 10:30 you really lose track. There was joy in simply wandering and exploring such a beautiful city. I didn't read as much as I wanted to but there was joy in observing, people watching and letting my mind just think or rest.

I mean, doesn't this just look peaceful to you?

It was just so good.

Wednesday night I took the lovely Amtrak north up to Seattle. Then it was such a great rest of the week with The Colemans (who are super great tour guides). Ash joined me thursday and we all explored, rested, adventured and more. Lake swimming, hiking, waterfalls, restaurants, cupcakes, coffee, chai, bus riding, walking, Pike's Place, pretty parks and views and so much more. Gosh, so good.

Pacific Northwest: Portland Part One

I finally ventured to the Pacific Northwest for an extended period of time. I have been to Portland, OR as well as Seattle and Yakima WA but all only briefly. If you know me, you know I have been in love with the PNW from afar. It was time to solidify that love.
Stop one: Portland - Monday July 5th, 2010.
It's so green (meant literally like the amount of trees but also in eco friendly), people are talkative and friendly, local independent business are all over, you can walk/bike/bus/metro all over so easily, houses are adorable and have overgrown flowers and shrubs; Coffee is fresh, fair trade, served in french presses and served in such open, friendly atmospheres.
It was a great 3 days of walking, exploring, journaling, observing, reading and tasting.

Last weekend Colleen, Debbie, Ash, Kyle and I ventured to Hume Lake to visit Josh & Dave and to soak up a weekend away.

We were each overloaded with goodness.
Let's start with the beginning:
Taste: We stopped for tacos at the very genuine Alta Mexican Market which Kyle had previously raved about. I absolutely love tacos so this was fabulous. Not to mention they had my rare favorite flavor of Arizona Iced Tea (Half Tea Half Passion).
Smell: The mountains up there smell way different than the local ones. Way better. It reminded me of camping when I was younger and many adventures. Which leads to feel..
Feel: It's finally cooling off from the hot drive through Bakersfield. We have to soak up the mountain air. It is so refreshing!
See: The sun was just dropping below the sky line and left a dusk painted sky over the city lights below. The trees painted silhouettes in the sky. Two of my favorite things came together as we climbed the elevation.
Hear: iPod party playlist - pass it around the car as everyone picks their favorite song to sing our hearts out to. You can't help but smile when Kyle sings Taylor Swift (Don't judge - not my song choice). Then the moments where we close our eyes and just hear the cool wind pass by.
This is all just the car ride up! Gosh, there was so much that continued to overwhelm us.

Art, a cause and music.

I really can't keep up with how God is moving within and through Abeni (the sex industry ministry myself and two others have started here in Orange County).

We're privileged to be supported and featured at this month's Downtown Fullerton Art Walk. The PAS gallery is doing so many great things with artist, awareness, community, development and loving people. It is such a simple and great mission in the heart of a great city. I been to the Art Walk twice and love it. Both times I have run into great people and enjoyed the energy all around. This month information about Abeni will be part of the evening as well as a portion of the art sales. Once again, we are blown away by the generosity of those around us.

Ian just gave me The Ragamuffin Gospel as another one of the books I need to read. I am hoping to have more time to read and get through a whole book.

Grace is something that is skewed in my view so I could use a refresher in what it means in my life and how to live it out. In honestly, I am good at doing. Helping, taking on a task, being committed, 'serving'. But I am not good at just being. I feel the need to earn people's affection and show the 'best' part of me and I guess I often think that comes out in things I can 'do' for others. This causes me to seek affirmation in an unhealthy way and to have unrealistic expectations of others based on what I expect of myself. Then I am reminded of what God expects and desires and it is much different than what I've been operating in. I don't have to present myself as better to Him. I don't need to sway His view. I am a bundle of paradoxes. It all depends on the day. But no matter what state I am in He is love, He is grace and He desires to do life with me. I mean, He gave His so I could go through all this and learn what it means to accept His grace over and over.

What is Grace right now in your life?

All I know is each day the sun sets and I awake to a new day to be free, alive and me.. who ever that is.. with Him.

Congratulations to both of my roomies who graduated two weekends ago. Now Karin and Colleen can both say they are officially done! Now it's job interviews, changes, 'responsibilities' and all that stuff.

It's that season.. I've been to two grad parties already and there's much more on the way.
But these one's are pretty special.
I love that I get to take pictures for people so important to me like Erika. After 6 years of doing youth ministry with her as one of my girls.. she is at the end. High school will soon be a part of the past. I've seen her grow so much, go through so many changes, learn and become who she is. We once thought we were going to die while being followed the whole way to the movies. We've shared stories, laughed like crazy, danced, prayed and so much more. She can graduate but she's not getting rid of me!

So excited for what is ahead.

Last Friday we squeezed in one final trip of the mountain to board. How could we not when the got plenty of fresh powder just before closing for the season? It was beautiful all around - conditions, weather, people.. Not to mention finishing the day with Mexican food. I think we all felt a little better saying "Bye" to winter with this great last day.

I remember first hearing there would eventually be a little one..
Phone calls about morning sickness while driving,

I mean we all know they are beautiful, peaceful, smell better, freeing and so on but I just can't get enough. The report says the season is almost over. But I can hope for a massive snow storm in the next few days right? Although I think the weather god hates me because it always rains where I am not. Storms avoid me. I am in need of some serious weather but all I see in the future here is some sun. I don't like the sun. I see a couple solutions for this.. stay inside with my new light blocking blinds, move, sunscreen/straw hat/cold drink/cold thoughts.. Okay, I am being little dramatic but I am sad the snow is melting, snowboarding is done and the April showers haven't been nearly enough. I just need to mourn a little.

Tonight = Copeland - The Farewell Tour. A sad day indeed but Copeland is one of the few bands I can always listen to and is always perfect for singing loud in the car. They make for the moments when I sing my heart out as if it sounds good. So many great people will come together tonight to enjoy this last run. It's been a good one. I have so many specific memories from the first two albums way back in high school and I plan on many more even if the making of the music has stopped.

Most of you know about the nine months I spent living in Las Vegas interning for XXXchurch doing ministry to the sex industry. This was a journey that was years in the making. A heart for women and those who are often made to feel worthless, disposable and invaluable finally came to use in a challenging way in this environment.

Upon moving back to Fullerton I knew I didn't want to give up loving and serving in this environment. I am constantly blown away by the ways God has brought together a carefully crafted team to carry out this passion in Southern California. Long story short - Abeni was birthed in November. Abeni means "Girl prayed for" In Swahili. For the past six months we have been planning, praying and doing our best to be extensions of His love and grace in the local sex industry. What does this look like? Relationships. Selfless love. We bring gifts, baked goods, meals and more to the women (and men) in local strip clubs. From here we have met friends who have stories to tell; heard about their hearts, families and struggles.

My favorite and most heartbreaking line we hear is, "We really don't have to pay you / I can't believe you want to do this for us / No one does anything like this for us / I feel so loved." This is why we do this. If we can be a positive moment in their day and lives then we are blessed. We know it is a tough industry and they are loved and deserve love just like we do. We know a God who has a love far beyond what we can comprehend.

The encouragement and prayers have been crucial as we build on this journey. We are constantly reminded of how good and in control God is.

We will be receiving spiritual and financial support from a great local church.
This week I received a super generous support check from a great woman from my church. I definitely started crying right there at work.

I am learning what Grace, love and worth look like in my own life through all of this. I'm on a journey and thankful for all that comes with it.

Rachel and I finally made the trip back to our previous (but temporary) home - Las Vegas. It was exciting, fun and relaxing to return. After a whole year I reunited with Krissee, my former roommate. It really blows my mind how fast time flies.

We stopped at some favorite food places - Agave, Einstein's, Sushi Samba (And attempted The Red Velvet Cafe but it is closed on Sundays). I was reminded of how dry skin gets in Vegas but also how much better hair styles in Vegas. You win some, you lose some. We went to the new City Center which is a total let down. I miss the wind, the people, the people watching, the ministry opportunities and more. But I am thankful for the lessons, the growth, the journey and the present.

I've met a lot of significant people in the past few years. I have really come to value so many people who have homes from an hour away to a few states away. I feel privileged to have relationships with these people. I never know where God is going to bring people into my life from but it is a welcomed adventure.

Here are a few of them:

Melody and Kaleb - Kaleb; former house mate. Melody; his wife. Both have great hearts and bring a lot of joy with 'em. Kaleb was such an important part of my life in Vegas and his other half is equally awesome!

Sam and Rachel - Gosh. Many dinners at the Sanchez home, taking up residence on their floor, house sitting, deep friendships and support.

Ash - Valuable friendship thanks to a random run in of mutual friends. A woman who is so genuine and adventurous in all she does!

This doesn't sum up how great these people are but if you don't know them, trust me.. they are pretty swell.

It's true. Time flies. I am not sure where it went. Here is when I begin to sound like a mom but these are my babies:

I started working with this group of girls (give or take a few) in June of 2004. They were in 7th grade. They are now in 12th grade; deciding on college locations and embarking on a whole new journey. They really mean so much to me. I've learned so much about investing in others, patience, growth, struggles, grace and love. They have challenged me in ways I never expected. Sorry for the ramble, I am just feeling sentimental of this significant time of my life with them.

Tomorrow we are having a progressive dinner. We did this their freshman year as well. I have such vivid memories of that night and so many in between.

I am blessed to be able to hold a significant place in their lives in such a valuable time in their lives. Blessed to be a blessing, or so I hope.

On January 2nd I gained these two lovely ladies (my new roomies) as I joined them at an adorable house in Fullerton.

It's been pretty lovely adjusting here.

The rain this week is AMAZING. I mean seriously-- water spouts, tornado warnings, floods-- in Orange County? Yes please. Something exciting and different has been glorious. Usually when the weather report says rain I know they just mean drizzle Californias freak out about but this has been legit, really intense rain! I would invite it to continue for a few more weeks!

I thought to myself, "It's raining. I should hurry and head to a cozy coffee shop and sit by a window and enjoy the rain." And then I thought to myself, "Wait, I'll just brew coffee, stay in my pjs, and sit by my window."

When I lived in Vegas and was doing ministry our adventures were often posted on facebook or on this blog. It was encouraging to see how many 'random' people would write in response to what we we're doing. People I haven't talked to in years, people I barely know and people close to me would write things of encouragement or ways they were affected by the stories. It was a blessing to me to see how others we're impacted by the words written.

Erica has already received one of these cool moments. A random person saw a note Erica wrote on facebook via a mutual friends profile and sent Erica a message..

"hi erica,
i saw your note on jordan's profile. the title caught my eye.
I just want you to know what a wonderful ministry that you are starting.
i say this coming from an abusive marriage and where feeling loved is a big struggle. through counseling though i have found my worth in God and that this love that other women can feel and the self worth and all that is so possible.
i will keep you and your team in my prayers.
thanx again for sharing."

You never know how or who you will affect. Often times we don't ever know the impact we make as we journey but moments like this are great reminders that God is at work beyond what we know.

New days. New journeys. New starts. New lessons. New challenges. New relationships. New beginnings. New life.

Last week marked the official beginning of a new journey. I am on a new journey with two other amazing women; Meg and Erica. God really has worked in amazing ways to lead each of our lives to be in relationship with each other and our hearts to begin a new journey in ministry and life.

For many different and similar reasons we have a heart for women and a brokenness that so often exist and we can all relate to. We have a desire to be practical love in places that the need is often overlooked or thought of as undeserved. God has called us to love with no bounds. Jesus came for the sick, broken, stuck in sin and alone. We are His hands and feet here.

So after meetings, praying, brainstorming and dreaming.. it's time to give these ideas ground. Last week we went out for the first time to a handful of local strip clubs. We went out with baskets filled with Vitamin Water, lotion, Tylenol, chapstick, bobby pins and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies as well as a Happy Thanksgiving note from us. We really had no idea how we would be received but we were ready to allow God to lead the way, give us the words and open the doors.

God has so much in store than we can imagine or prepare for. In one of the clubs we were welcomed back and the girls loved the basket, were eager to converse, welcomed us again and even gave hugs. We figured we would have the most opposition at this club and yet all the management, bouncers and staff welcomed us as well. We left overjoyed with the great people we met and favor we had throughout the night.

God is already working out great things for future visits, planning, support and more. I really feel blessed to be able to embark on this journey. I am challenged by God's grace and love for His children. I want to be a woman who accepts His grace and love in my life and can overflow to those around me.

So here is to new beginnings new relationships and new challenges. Thank you for all the support, prayer and love so many of you bring. You are valued!

It was a sacrifice of sleep and warmth but we gathered, got 7eleven warm drinks and ventured out to darkness (as dark as it gets in Orange County). There were far too many cars driving by but we found a pretty good spot to view the display. It wasn't a 'shower' as far as what we could see but we witnessed some amazing displays of light in the sky. It is insane to think about how much more is out there that we cannot see. It's a big universe and yet you and I matter.

Staff Serve Day

This past Thursday all our staff took the day to join the Kaboom Organization and tons of Home Depot and City of Fullerton Volunteers to totally enhance a local park. It went from a grassy park with nothing else to have trees, plants, a whole play ground, swings, benches, wood chips and much more. It was amazing to see how quickly it came together with everyone's hard work. It was also fun to join coworkers in a different environment to give back to the local children and families.

Roman and Delsey have the best tradition of going to Oak Glen once fall arrives. I didn't make it last year but 2009 was not going to pass by without a trip to Glen Oak. So, Calendars out and a month of planning and it happened!

I am aware California isn't know for Autumn colors but I was amazed by how pretty it was. The drive up was beautiful. So rich, vibrant and unfamiliar. It was a fabulous Saturday of apple cider, photographs, friends and exploring the beauty!

The world-within-a-world of social networking has its benefits, but it’s also continually drawing us further into an “invent your own fantasy” identity and away from face-to-face relationships. This year, the average American will spend more time with their computer than with their spouse. As a study in the March 2009 International Business News so aptly put it, “Facebook, Twitter users among the loneliest in America.

It’s easy to see why escaping to the social networking world is so inviting. On Facebook, you can hide behind a persona, be any version of yourself you can dream up. Online friends don’t borrow money and not pay it back, gossip or spill Gatorade in your car. They don’t show up at your house after just getting dumped and stay until 2 a.m. when you have to be at work in the morning. Online “friendships” are always efficient.

True friendship demands vulnerability. It requires that you rearrange your schedule, and intentionally plan time to spend with other people with no agenda. It demands choice, as sociologists agree that it’s only possible to have eight to 12 “real” friends, and attempting to manage more relationships than that only ends in a series of casual acquaintances."

I think this article brings up some very true points. It is so easy to allow people to see many facets of our lives via social networking. People know what I have been eating, doing for fun, where I have been traveling and more from what I openly display on the web. We seem to be in touch so there is little need for more contact outside of that, right? It can seem that way. It is convenient but lacks a true sense of vulnerability, emotion and depth. Then we find ourselves (or at least myself) wondering why we lack significant relationships. We have replaced genuine communication with stagnant texting, internet chatting and through the grape vine knowledge. There is a loss of face to face conflict resolution, story telling and life sharing. Marriages are torn apart because communication is a lost art. Underneath it all maybe we are avoiding pain, truth and being real. Don't get me wrong, I love the internet and technology. It has many pluses but there are always cons.

I could keep going but I won't. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Friday was the 2nd Annual Dance Dance Revelation. It was a lot of work/prep but well worth it. I had a blast and it seems like others did as well. We had a great turn out. There were a lot of new friends and new people which made it all worth it.

I picked up the Book Crazy Love by Francis Chan again last night. I hate that so often I feel like i do things out of habit, 'need', routine or guilt. I definitely hate that my relationship with God can be like that. Routine is not genuine. I despise things being done for me out of pity or guilt and I can imagine God is not a big fan either. He doesn't need my love. But He wants it. And He wants me to receive His. And that is where I want to rest. Nothing significant here, just trying to journey forward.

Right now the pumpkin candle burning in my room is smelling brilliant. I am sipping on tea, listening to music and enjoying a slow evening. It's chilly in my room (with no a/c necessary) and the crisp air is lovely. I think I am the poster child for the excitement of all things Fall and Pumpkin. People I do not even talk to think of me when they eat something pumpkin flavored. So I get excited about the little things, I like it that way.

four years of briefing

I love traditions. I do Holidays and occasions with full effort - decor, treats, attire, etc. And you always have to document with photos. Looking back on past years of repeated events is so great.

One thing that has happened for the past four years is the annual young adult trip to Forest Home (see previous post). For the past four years we have gathered our group to take a picture together on the 'small bridge'. I looked through my hard drive and found the collection.

Being a part of the Young Adult Ministry has been such a blessing. I've grown close to so many people, learned a lot of about serving, the challenges that come with it and seeking God and His will through it all. We are blessed with such a genuine and growing community, Ian and Julia and all their heart for the ministry and the people in it and being able to see growth and passions lived through those around us.

A cool breeze, mountains, community, solitude, late nights, endless laughing, stars..

All things that make little moments more significant. They make me stop, take it in and enjoy. Forest Home was a great weekend to get away with amazing people (new friends and old), worship and quiet our lives. I love the mountains. Going off roading was a great time of enjoying the scenery, getting off to an isolated area and being a little scared for my life. The weekend was super bonding for our church community and it was a great time of personal reflection, conviction and growth for me. I am so blessed to have so many people who love and support me and are on this journey with me. I really am honored to be part of such a genuine and growing community of people truly seeking Him in their lives.

I've been pondering True Community. It has come up in many different contexts and conversations lately - Goals, a lack of, an abundance, etc.

I hear some cities are horrible for it, "I've lived here for years and haven't made a friend." Or "I have so many great friends that it can be hard to stay connected with all of them." And so on.

I don't know what it looks like for you, but to me community is a complex thing. Everyone has different expectations, desires and needs. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with how blessed I am by people in my life. Sometimes I feel totally empty no matter how many people I am around or how great the people in my life are. This can change quickly. So I ask myself, "When will I be consistently satisfied with the community taking place in my life?" I definitely do not have it all figured out but I do know God calls us to be dependent upon Him and one another. Him first, others second. He calls me to shift my focus to those around me; no matter how different or alike, how easy (or hard) they may be to love or if I will get anything in return.

Honestly, that is my goal. I love people (or I desire to). I thrive off of social interaction, busy rooms and real conversations. But in those times I find myself unsatisfied I find the answer of why in the fact that I've got it out for order. Being around people, helping people, phone conversations and facebook interactions will not do the trick. I have to first be seeking God in my life in order to experience community or love those around me. When I am not engaged in my relationship with God my other interactions are based on routine and selfish motives, not of genuine desire or overflowing love. This may sound basic and I hope it is for you, but I need reminding.

So rambling aside.. I am finding some time to myself. Time for reading, listening, writing and processing; giving myself over to my creator.

So I'm home. Although I am happy, being sick hasn't made for an enjoyable return.

I am grateful I was able to go to high school camp. My girls are seniors now! This is year 6 with them and I am honored to have spent so many years in their lives.

At this last summer camp I was reminded of our first summer camp together in 2004. We played the same camp game this year we played the first year. There were just as many over the top hilarious moments. This camp was different in seeing how much the girls desired to listen to God, encourage each other, confess, grow and be who He wants them to be. Priorities are different now and it is so exciting to see the growth in the their lives. We looked back at the last 5 years, prayed over hurts and healing and enjoyed eating, talking, relaxing and being crazy together. I am encouraged and blessed to be a part of their journey.

So Vegas didn't end the way it was planned to but I am humbled to see how God has moved me away from my plan and towards his. I had a plan in my head about how life would look for me upon returning but as I made the journey back that plan began to reroute. So thanks to Jesus and some great people in my life I will start a new job tomorrow at my church. I really am honored to be chosen and working with so many people I love and respect at a place I love so much. I am excited. More to come on this!

Goals for today:
rest and feel better, finally see (500) days of summer, be reunited with yogurtland, get organized and enjoy some new music.

Summer is over. That is weird but lately I have been day dreaming about Fall - festivities, leaves, pumpkin flavored treats and sweaters. Mhmm!

Leaving Las Vegas.

Today is the day. Moving day.
I'm almost all packed. I'm fueled up. I'm ready to load the car (okay I might not be ready but I am trying to be).

Today involved one last Einstein's Bagels trip with Rach, packing/errands and now some downtime followed by one more make up photo shoot.

Then it is just me and the 15 south.

So we had to take pictures with the other side of 'The Sign'. "Drive carefully, Come back soon." Why thank you, Las Vegas. I have mixed thoughts and feelings but it's time to part ways for now.

Two signs I am stressed:
-knots in my stomach
-knots in my shoulders

Right now I sit at my Coffee Bean in Las Vegas with both signs. I am making a list of things I need to do/gather before I leave, people to say bye to, last hoorah events to be had and deciding when to actually leave.

I am leaving las Vegas earlier than originally planned, earlier than I thought two weeks ago and now earlier than I thought yesterday. Ya know.. why plan? Plans are ever changing. I am trying my best to go with the flow. Making decisions and putting my foot down where needed are not my strong points. I'd rather do what you want than what I want. I am working on a happy medium.

All that to say - time to load up the car one last time, run final errands and enjoy the next 24 hours or so. Woah, weird.

Last night Rachel and I found some adventures while taking a few final pictures of LV. Lot's of traffic, purse snacks and high winds all amount to laughing and good times.

"A Desperate Call."

You might remember me writing about a friend who has left the ex industry and having a rough time. I was going to write an update but here is Rachel's entry from last weekends ordeal.

"So the other night my friend that lives here in Vegas with me, gets a call from a lady that she met a little while ago. Lets call her Annie. As most of you know, there are a few of us here in Vegas that have visited strip clubs and brothels seeking out relationships with the girls that work in these environments. Whether it be through hair, makeup, cooking etc. we want to get to know them as beautiful women that have been created for amazing things.

So my friend gets a call from a girl that she met along this journey and texts me as she is talking with her, to let me know what is going on. Annie sounds disoriented, confused and is repeating herself over and over. She tells my friend that she was lost in the streets with her dog. My friend (Phylicia) tries to get some information from her but Annie cant seem to remember anything and repeats herself forgetting that she has just told Phylicia that same thing. Phylicia continues to stay on the phone with her knowing that things aren’t normal, as she has called before and knows a little about Annie. Phylicia is told by a friend to find someone and go to Annie’s house. Phylicia texts me to ask if i will drive with her to go see if Annie is ok. So i pick her up and we head to Annie’s apartment. Phylicia stays on the phone with her this whole time. We find her apartment, we walk in and if you know Vegas in the summer it gets to 110 degrees normally during the day. As we walk in to her apartment, a temperature that no one should have to live in engulfs us. No AC which is pretty abnormal for vegas, stuff everywhere, a dog named inspiration and a confused Annie are inside. We try and ask her how she is feeling. (side note: she takes medications for a few different things) We try and get her to drink some water and continue to dig stuff out of her. By this time we are all drenched in sweat due to the extreme heat in the apartment.

We finally have no choice but to take her to the emergency room. Of course we were there to help but at this point we are not doctors and it seemed as though there was nothing we could do but pray. So we proceed to walk her to the car. That alone was a process. Her words were slurring, she could barely stand up and walking down the stairs was the last thing she wanted to do. Phylicia is holding her up and I am in front of them pretending that if either of them fall I am going to catch them. (not realizing at the time that if either of them fell…..we were all going down.)

We get her in the car and she keeps asking us where we are going. We tell her we are headed to the hospital and not a block from her apartment she is flipping out. Yelling and telling us she doesn’t want to go, swinging her arms and trying to get out of the car. i lock the doors so that she doesn’t jump out of the car and Phylicia jumps from the passengers seat to the back to help calm her down. I start praying out loud desperately and Phylicia tries to talk to her and calm her down. Within seconds (which seemed like hours) she calms down and we begin to talk about fun things like her dog, my dog, family…pretty much anything that would keep her focused and talking.

We arrive at the hospital. It was me and phylicia who are both around 24 and then Annie who has had a rough day and does not look well taken care of who is about 35. You can only imagine what people are thinking as we walk in carrying her on our shoulders. We get her set up to see a doctor. She seems to be calmed down and headed back to normal behavior. She cant remember what she has taken but seems to be hiding a few things from us and the doctor. They get her to a bed and hook her up to the machine. We sat in the room for about 2 hours, first waiting for a doctor and secondly trying to convince Annie that she needed to let the doctor take blood and urine samples. We sat convincing her for a good half hour with no progress. She refused to do any testing. We ended up walking out of the hospital at midnight with not much accomplished. We (phylicia, the doctors, nurses and i) all could pretty much tell that it wasn’t just prescription drugs she had taken that night. We drove her home a little defeated but trying to remind her that we were there for her and we care. We get her back into her extremely hot apartment. By the time we get there she is pretty much fully recovered for the moment so we feel ok to leave her.

All this to say she has called Phylicia a few more times and sometimes wants help and sometimes doesn’t. Every time there is a call from a women in desperate times I quickly learn over and over that I alone cannot heal or free her from whatever it is that she is going through. but I do know that being their friend around the clock is so important to them. We both felt a little discouraged about not getting much accomplished but we were both glad that she called Phylicia (who she barely knows). Knowing that most of these women dont have family or friends to call in time of need is worth every moment that we think seems pointless."

In my head I have been making a list of things I will miss about Las Vegas. For the record, the heat will not be one of them.

There are a lot of things/places/people that are close to my heart.
But, I am mentally and physically drained so we'll just start with -

Restaurants I will miss:

*Ellis Island (home of the $6.99 steak meal)
*Late night Diners (always interesting people)

Not so lucky in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is know for a lot of things - one major thing being money. It is known for glitz, glamor, vacation, spa treatments, 'entertainment'.. but if you drive just a few miles north of the captivating Las Vegas Strip you drive into what seems like a whole different world. It looks something like this:

You see tent after tent lining Main Street in North Las Vegas. This is the not so glamorous area with a huge homeless population, shelters, The Rescue Mission and poverty. Right now it is 96 degrees which seems cool for Las Vegas right now. But people are living in tents with no source for cool air or hydration. 115 is not uncommon in the summer and it gets extremely cool in the winter. Harsh weather either way are a part of daily life for these people. Driving through this area feels like a different country. How easily we forget this is a reality where we live. The Rescue Mission feeds 700 people daily along with providing shelter, the hope of Jesus and much more. Thank God for these people who are devoting their lives to the overlooked in Las Vegas.

I drove past this area as I went to visit a women, children and pet shelter in North Las Vegas - The Shade Tree. This place is amazing and heart breaking. The facility is so nice, women can bring their pets to be cared for, they receive heath care, a case manager, beds, classes to help them be self sufficient, 24 hour security, job assistance and so much more. 300 women and children find shelter daily. I am so thankful they have somewhere wonderful to go but my heart breaks for the position they are in. Women who are 8 months pregnant who have had no prenatal care, women who have fled abusers and women who feel they can't seem to get a break. I am reminded how much hurt there is within the city I live in and yours as well. I am excited to help women who are applying for Jobs with a hair cut and style and however else I can possibly help.

The needs are all around. Please be open to those who may need your help.

Tonight I haven't felt very well. I spent most of my night in bed until I went to water my little sunflower and saw none other than LIGHTNING in the sky. Okay, If you do not know - I am completely obsessed with stormy weather, rain, thunder, wind - anything other than plane old sunshine. So in a matter of minutes Giles and I jumped in the car full of adrenaline with camera gear in hand. We wanted to take pictures tonight anyway, so now was the perfect chance. A quick 5 minute drive to a dark side street later we were perched out, shooting away! I cannot tell you how many times I high fived Giles, screamed when I missed shots and when I nailed them or the amount of joy during this hour long shooting experience. I haven't been around lightning to try shooting it but this first time was great! Sorry, I am overly excited.. but here are the winners:

Seriously, I am amazed at God's display! This by far made my whole day (and then some). I am crossing my fingers for more tomorrow.

I am on the phone with a woman who is breaking my heart.
We have had lunch twice. We talk on the phone regularly. She is transitioning out of the sex industry and it is no easy task.
Here's an idea:
A landlord who wont fix the Air Conditioning unless she gives him what he wants - sex.
An ex boyfriend who still has power over her and is constantly manipulating her for her money, body - whatever he wants.
Overdue rent, late fees
Homes that wont shelter her because she does not have children
Home items stolen
Health issues
Not to mention all the emotional damage she has and is facing.

I want to do everything I can to help her. This is big stuff. Most is beyond my control.

Please pray for her. Pray for protection, peace, healing and restoration in her life.

Tonight the skies turned stormy and my roommate Giles and I had to take some pictures. We found this tiny town that had some attractions - petting zoo, train, stores and more. The little train station and tracks were great! It felt like we went back in time.

Last weekend Rachel C., Laura, Jessica and I ventured back to the Brothel. Like usual we come prepared with food, gifts and time to just hang out. This was a great trip. We had plenty of time to enjoy diner, dessert and hearing about their lives and learning about each other. We were blessed to hear the story of one of the ladies. There were moments of laughing, holding back tears and sighs of relating as well as our hearts breaking. But even with out hearing the words, you can see the pain behind what is being described. At the same time you see determination and desire.

I love to listen to people and their stories and moments like this where three hours later she says, "Just one more story.." I know that she is even finding healing and comfort in just having people to listen to her. When asked what she feels she needs in her life, she responded with a previously thought out, "Money, shelter and love from a man." She wants to know what it is like to be loved, taken care of and valued. Don't we all? I could see the hope in her eyes as we encouraged her, reminded her we would be praying and that we would see her much more soon. Cliche as it sounds, she was reminded that no matter what her job, place in life or hurts - God cares, listens and loves. This isn't the end of her journey. She has been through more in her life, and especially the past year that I can even fathom but she has endured. She needs the support of her creator and the ones who love her. Please pray for her and her journey, heart and healing.

While at the brothel we were able to bring food and visit the brothel next door. With out any relationship with the owner, we never know how we will be received but in a way far beyond our understanding we have been received and welcomed. We have had favor this week far beyond what we imagined. We look forward to spending more time with the staff here as well.

I am super behind and for some reason I wrote this blog and never posted it. So, it's late but enjoy none the less...

Despite how hot it is here, I will say Welcome to Summer since today is the first official day. Even though it is only mid nineties here - it's way hot and I don't know how well I will last. So here's to AC, car visors, iced coffee, smoothies, bbq's, pools, sunscreen and deodorant.

I do love going out side every day to water my little sunflower plant and seeing how much it has grown. EDIT: it seems to be wilting in the triple digits. sad day.

Also, being summer - people have more time to visit!
Early this week Tiffany, Alison and Amy came to visit and explore LV. Most important - The Buffets! We all know tiff is a champ eater but we all put on our game face and set forward to achieve the 4 plate minimum (not restaurant policy but our own. Gotta get your moneys worth)!

If you know me, you probably know night time lights are one of my absolute favorite things. And I live in Vegas, the brightest city I have ever seen! So you might think I have taken a bunch of pictures of this city by now, but I haven't. While waiting at the airport the other night I took a few from the parking structure and driving. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I, not only have been contacted by your friend, but had lunch with her today. It was such a great relief. I can't explain why I felt so trapped, all I know is she broke that feeling. I feel I made my first real friend here, not including my fiance. We discussed step by step action that I can take to change that are not overwhelming and drastic but baby steps. I feel really confident. She made me understand I can't just stop dancing tonight and how it is ok but how to ween off and know that I can. I am not a bad person, I have just made bad decisions. It's time! I'm ready! Now I ask GOD, " NOW WHAT?? "

This email brings me joy. Knowing this loved woman is seeing her worth, value and ability to move forward in the direction she desires is amazing. In her first email she seemed so hopeless and trapped ("I have a co-dependency problem, depression, A.D.D., dyslexia, and I'm terrified."). But, that is not the end of her story. She is loved and then some by God and people near her as well as far away.

I look forward to journeying with her, seeing her progress and supporting her.

It was the perfect weekend to be in Cali Last weekend - College Grads and my girls all grown up and going to Prom (im such a mom, i know).
